First Time Skiing in Manali? Everything You Need to Know
thebackCountryOdyssey Team•4 min read
From layering properly for sub-zero alpine temperatures to mastering your very first snowplow turn, here is your definitive checklist.
Stepping onto skis for the first time can feel both thrilling and intimidating. The secret to rapid progress is simple: proper coaching, the right equipment fit, and gentle gradients.
### 1. Dressing for Sub-Zero Alpine Temperatures
Sethan sits at 2,700 meters, where temperatures routinely dip to -8°C. Do not wear heavy cotton or jeans. Use the 3-layer system:
- **Base layer**: Moisture-wicking merino wool or thermal synthetic top and bottom.
- **Mid layer**: Warm fleece jacket or lightweight packable down sweater.
- **Outer shell**: Windproof and waterproof ski jacket and pants with at least 10,000mm rating.
- **Accessories**: Waterproof insulated ski gloves (never wool knit), category 3 UV goggles, and tall ski socks.
### 2. Renting the Right Gear
Your ski boots must fit snugly around your ankle and calf without cutting off circulation. Our coaching team manually fits each guest before heading onto the slope.
### 3. Patience and Posture
Keep your shins pressed forward against the tongue of your boots, bend your knees, and look where you want to go, not at your ski tips!
